Summer Course
in Early Dance
January 10-12 (Wednesday to Friday)
North Sydney
2018 marks our ninth annual Summer Course in North Sydney. This year we will feature some favourite dances from the 16th, 17th & 18th-early 19th Centuries, representing the Renaissance, Baroque and Classical/Regency eras in music and dance history.
Dancing in past centuries has served many purposes: social lubricant, an
opportunity for courtship, aristocratic ostentation, and the ritual
expression of communal joy.
Noble dance provided physical and mental exercise—for those with the
leisure & means to pursue it. Regular dance lessons were key to
cultivating the deportment and manners needed for acceptance and
participation in court and polite society.
Today we are rediscovering the benefits of dance
of all kinds. Scholarship over the past fifty years and more has
fostered the rebirth of early dance. New generations around the world
can delight in the elegant pleasures of the aristocratic ballroom—once
the preserve of the fortunate few.
Renaissance sessions will sample court dances in use in the 16th & early 17th centuries. Ranging from graciously elegant to exuberantly lively, there will be French Pavanes, Branles, Galliards & an Italian Balletto.
Baroque sessions will focus on the noble French baroque style and technique of the late 17th and early 18th century, featuring the enduring Minuet and Gavotte.
Classical/Regency sessions will explore the mingling of noble & popular styles in country & contredanse forms favoured at assemblies around Europe in the later 18th C & beyond.
Participants may choose to do all sessions, or focus on one or two eras. Those new to early dance are urged to attend the Wednesday sessions to learn steps used to build up our chosen dances over the three days.
No previous dance experience required, nor do you need to bring a partner.
